There are two things that come to my mind that illustrate this for me.
First, I have always loved the painting of the Savior, "Behold I Stand at the Door". The artist has put the Savior outside a door where he is knocking but there is no door knob! The door can only be opened from the inside.
Secondly, I also like this poem by Carol Lynn Pearson:
Prayer
This radio set
Called prayer
Is designed
For remarkably
Simple repair.
When's the lines fail,
There is no doubt
Which half
Of the set
Is out.
Isn't that what Samuel the Lamanite is saying in this verse? If you want the Lord to come, to be with you continually and guide your life, first ask yourself, "Is there something I need to change?" Then open the door!
For some those could be major changes but for me it is almost always the same. I have to set aside time to be with Him. Consistent reading of scripture and prayer open that door for me.
What opens that door for you?
